A 36-year-old Letcher County man is scheduled to appear in Letcher District Court next week to answer charges of murder and fetal homicide filed against him after a woman and her unborn baby were killed in a traffic accident near Camp
Gross, of Pistol City, is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing in Letcher District Court at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 19. Gross in connection with the deaths of Amanda F. Smith, 28, of Neon, and her unborn child.
Sgt. Brian Damron of the Letcher County Sheriff’s Department said Gross, allegedly high on an antianxiety drug at the time of the accident, was traveling north on KY 931 around 6:50 p.m. on Sunday when the Ford Explorer he was driving dropped off of the roadway and hit a culvert, causing the vehicle to flip and land on the driver’s side.
Kentucky State Police say Smith and her unborn child were pronounced dead at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital shortly after the wreck. Letcher County Deputy Coroner Robbie Campbell said tests performed during an autopsy revealed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Campbell said a doctor weeks pregnant.
Gross was also charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs under aggravated circumstances (first offense), third-degree possession of a controlled substance (alprazolam), and possession of a controlled substance not in a proper container.
Gross was taken the Whitesburg hospital where he was treated for injuries and released.
State police said no seat belts were in use at the time of the collision.
An investigation is continuing by KSP Detective John Griffith and Trooper Brandon Thomas. Funeral arrangements remained incomplete at press time.
