Man charged with selling OxyContin free on bond




A Letcher County native arrested on charges of selling illegal narcotics was released from the Letcher County Jail after a Tennessee woman posted a $20,000 cash bond.

Allen Layne Mullins, 64, of Edison, Tenn., was released from jail November 14 after bond was posted by Renattia Jean Burke, 38, of Bristol, Va., who is a registered nurse.

A large quantity of OxyContin with approximately $23,000 in cash was located and seized November 13 from a 1998 Jeep Cherokee of which Mullins was the driver, according to police.

Mullins was arrested after the Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard, H.I.D.T.A. (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) Drug Task Force, Letcher County Sheriff’s Department and the Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Highway 119 North in Mayking. The KSP Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement K-9 Unit assisted in the search of Mullins’s vehicle.

Mullins was charged with possession of a controlled substance first degree.

A preliminary hearing for Mullins is set for 10:30 a.m. on November 26 in Letcher District Court.

Also on November 13, a search warrant was executed at the residence of Allen Layne Mullins’s son, Allen Carl Mullins Jr., located on KY 3400 in Payne Gap. Police said a quantity of OxyContin was located at the residence but Allen Carl Mullins Jr., 31, was not arrested.
