A Perry County woman is dead and her boyfriend is in police custody following a shooting at Sassafras overnight Thursday, June 18.
Kentucky State Police received a report of shots fired about 11:20 p.m. that night, and troopers arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later. While on the scene, more shots were fired inside a house on Yellow Creek.
The state police Special Response Team, and the Knott County Sheriff ’s Department also responded and spent the night outside the residence. About 6 a.m. Friday, Jeffery Skiles, 58, of Sassafras, came out of the house and officers took him into custody. When they searched the house, they found the body of 39-yearold Jeannie Vanzant, of Leatherwood, dead of gunshot wounds.
Skiles has been charged with murder (domestic violence) and first-degree wanton endangerment. More charges are expected.
The incident is still under investigation by detectives from the KSP.
