Man charged with stealing presents remains in jail

A Neon man accused of stealing presents on Christmas Eve is still in the Letcher County Jail where his bond is set at $10,000 cash.

Chad Bentley, 28, was arrested December 24 and charged with second degree burglary after police found presents and other items belonging to Billy Brown and Renee Wampler.

Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Bates said Brown and Wampler woke up around 6 a.m. on Christmas Eve after they heard someone going out their door. Bates, who is in charge of the investigation, said Wampler told him she saw Bentley running up the road.

Bates said that within a quartermile of the location from where the presents were stolen he saw two men carrying items out of a vehicle into a residence. After being given permission to search the residence, Bates said he found the stolen presents and electronics sitting on the floor.

Bates estimates the items to be valued in excess of $7,000. He said the investigation is continuing.
