Man held after using name of dead man to obtain a fake ID

A 44-year-old Thornton man was charged with perjury last week after an alert deputy clerk realized the man had obtained an identification card by using the name of another man who is no longer living.

Charges of second-degree perjury and criminal attempt to commit theft were filed against Michael W. Lucas after the clerk who issued the ID called police after she recognized the name Lucas was using as being that of a man who was already dead.

Whitesburg City Police Officer Mark Sexton arrested Lucas, of 3936 Thornton Road, after conducting a short investigation.

In an affidavit filed with an arrest warrant on July 5, Sexton says Lucas “made a materially false statement to a deputy clerk when Lucas stated that his name was Douglas Gene Watts (already deceased) in order to procure a state-issued identification card.”

The warrant says that after Lucas got the card he took it to Cash Express in Whitesburg, where he used it for identification while trying to cash a check written for “well over $300.”
