Many residents of Blair Branch are ill

Blair Branch

Hello all! I hope this finds you well. Are you enjoying this heat wave? I know I sure am! Really, I don’t mind the rain that much. The mud can be annoying, but we can’t have it all our way. As long as it stays warm, I can deal with the rain and mud. I’ll take this weather we are having over snow and ice any day

Going back to school has gone smoother than I expected it to. I assumed I would have a horrible time getting Bailey back on track, but oddly, it hasn’t been that bad. Well, at least for him. I on the other hand, have had a harder time getting back into a normal sleep schedule.

Blair Branch sure has had a streak of bad luck lately. There sure are a lot of people needing prayers.

James “Jake” Halcomb is in ICU at Hazard ARH. He was admitted because his heart was racing, he was dehydrated, and also had a fever and chest congestion. His daughter, Jamie Collins, said he has double pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and had another mini-stroke. Jake is battling leukemia as well. Dad, Allen Whitaker, went to check on him while Mom, Sylvania Whitaker, was in dialysis. Dad said Jake is real sick man and is in need of prayers.

Grandma, Lucy (Halcomb) Blair, is still in the hospital at Whitesburg. Michael, the boys and I went to visit her a few days ago. She seemed to be having a better day. Her arm was no longer draining, and she was able to sit up on the side of the bed to eat her dinner. This afternoon when I called Mom to ask about Grandma, she said Grandma had been up all night smothering. She had therapy again today and was able to take a few steps, but she was exhausted after.

Steve and Marcie Blair came in from Indiana to spend the weekend. They brought their boys and were able to spend some time with Grandma at the hospital. I am sure she was glad to see them. I wish we had been able to, but it just didn’t work out that way. Hopefully next time.

Mom has been feeling pretty good the last few days. She has her good days and her bad days. Dialysis sure is rough on her. It seems like every time I see her she has lost more weight. She can’t have most things that she likes and that is hard. She has to follow a pretty strict diet for dialysis.

Dad’s shoulder is still giving him a rough time. He saw the doctor and he said Dad had bursitis and it was infected. They gave him a couple shots, but it doesn’t seem to be helping.

Ila Adams has been sick as well. She had a couple mini-strokes. I know her kids were worried sick, but I believe she is doing a little better now.

Esteva Blair was taken to the ER one day this week, but wasn’t admitted to the hospital. I’m not sure exactly what was wrong, but I hope she is feeling better.

I spoke with Benji Smith Jr. at IGA and he said he had just been released from the hospital. He was admitted with chest pains and is going for a heart cath in the next few days. I hope everything turns out alright for him.

Debbie had to take my uncle, Roger Whitaker, to the ER with chest pains. His enzymes were up and they wanted to admit him, but he wouldn’t let them. I hope he is feeling better now.

Also, please don’t forget Ty Colley. Ty is the youngest son of Martin and Monica Colley. He was in the Children’s Hospital at UK this past week and had to have his kidney removed because of a Wilms tumor. He will be undergoing chemo and radiation soon. Ty is only four years old. I can’t imagine how scary all this must be for him as well as Martin and Monica.

The residents of Blair Branch lost yet another friend and neighbor. Hobert Blair died on January 16. He was 72. Hobert was the son of the late Dewey and Mandy Adams Blair. Surviving are his wife: Kathleen Blair; two brothers: Van Blair of Jeremiah and Lyle Blair of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three sisters: Wanitta Grey of Ocala, Fla., Thelma Kelly of Sadieville, and Mable Snider of Columbus, Ohio. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I would like to wish a belated happy birthday to Gracie Caudill. She celebrated her birthday on January 3 with family and friends at the Blackey Missionary Baptist Church. Sorry we didn’t get to make it, and sorry I am so late getting this in here. I try, but I am so forgetful sometimes. I hope your birthday was a great one, sweetie!

Also, happy birthday to Manis Blair on January 18, Dakota Combs, Larry Blair, and Tanner Blair, 22nd; and Laronda Adams, 23rd.

Heather and Frank Phillips celebrated their anniversary on January 21. Happy anniversary! I hope you have many more wonderful years together.

If I have left anyone or anything out, just let me know and I will get you next week. I hope everyone has a healthy and happy week. If you would like to contact me, you may do so at alanacouch@ tvscable.com.
