Marietta Collins retiring from bank after 46 years

Whitesburg

Marietta Profitt Collins will be retiring from the Whitaker Bank Corporation after 46 years.

Marietta Profitt Collins will be retiring from the Whitaker Bank Corporation after 46 years.

I saw on Facebook yesterday where Marietta Profitt Collins is retiring after 46 years of working at Whitaker Bank Corporation, formerly known as the Bank of Whitesburg, or as my daddy used to call it, “The Old Bank.” Marietta and I worked together at the bank back in 1977 and 1978. We later were roommates for a little while until I moved into my dad’s rental property.

Congratulations, Marietta. I know you will enjoy your retirement as much as you love to travel.

Another person retiring this year is Nancy Spencer Ratliff. She’s retiring from the Letcher County Public Schools. She was an aide in Ms. Pat Bolling’s room when I first started teaching at Martha Jane Potter. She was later transferred to Mr. Stanley’s kindergarten class at Fleming-Neon Elementary, and then when Martha Jane Potter and Fleming-Neon merged, she came back to Martha Jane Potter with Mr. Stanley.

One of the things I will always remember about her is how my granddaughter Story Eliza Hampton said she felt sorry for Ms. Nancy. When we asked her why, she said that when you finish kindergarten you get to go on to the first grade, but Ms. Nancy has had to stay in kindergarten for over 20 years.

Dorothy Sexton celebrated her birthday on the 14th. She’s pictured here with her two grandchildren, Chesnee Kruze Mason, who turned 11 March 24th (not 10, like I thought when I posted her picture in this column back in March), and Tucker Mason.

Don’t forget the canned food drive going on all this month at Letcher County Central. This is in honor of Keith Adams.

On April 24 there will be a bike ride in honor of Jordan Fields.

Lots of birthdays to mention this week. Dorothy Sexton celebrated her birthday on the 14th and Hannah Melton Baker had a birthday on the 15th. Elaine Adams’s birthday was on the 17th. On the 18th Ruth Frazier celebrated her 95th birthday.

So many on the 10th were Wendell Cook, Freida Buttrey Ratliff, Makayla Jones, Logan Wynn, and Jim Howard.

On the 21st will be Pam Walker and Felicia Hampton Lucas.

We have had another member of Letcher County Senior Citizens pass away. James Hall passed away on the 15th. James loved coming to Senior Citizens, especially to play corn hole. He was the partner everybody wanted because he was an expert. He will be greatly missed.

Wendell Cook’s daughter Amy Combs found this paper airplane and piece of sheetrock in Wendell’s childhood home and had him make her a frame without telling him why she needed it. She then presented him this as a gift.

Orville Sturgill also passed away this past Saturday on the 17th. He was a son of Betty Ratliff Frazier and stepson of Bill Frazier. Bill and Betty are members at my church at Letcher Independent Baptist. She has been requesting prayers for him for almost a year. He was only 50 years old.

One of our Letcher County schoolteachers really needs our prayers, Sharie Bailey. She had gall bladder surgery and has had complications. Also, still be in prayer for Keith Adams’s mom and dad, Billy and Connie Adams. Connie was to have surgery on her finger Monday, and Billy is still in serious condition at UK Hospital. I haven’t heard how Connie’s surgery went, because Mom’s Internet has been down all evening. Her finger was mangled from the wreck. I’m sure they need our prayers for their mental and physical health.

Please remember to pray for all our pastors, especially Bill Craft and my pastor, Bill Jones, and his entire family. Try to support them by showing up for church. Online services are just not the same as actually being in the congregation. It’s just not the same people.

Nancy Spencer Ratliff will be retiring from the Letcher County Board of Education and posted this: “Facebook Friends and Family, The Lord and I have decided that it’s time for me to retire from my position as an instructional assistant with the Letcher County Public Schools. If I had the pleasure of being the assistant in your kindergarten room or your child’s kindergarten room, please share a precious memory or memories with me as well as any pictures you may have. Also, former co-workers, please do so too. I have loved ALL my kindergarten babies I have worked with over the years at Martha Jane Potter and Fleming-Neon Elementary.
