Marker dedicated at Pound Gap

The Reverend Steve Peake, pastor of Corinth Baptist Church in Fleming, spoke before giving the invocation at the unveiling of a new historic marker at Pound Gap. The Community Remembrance Coalition of Wise County, Va., applied for and took donations to pay for the marker, which is intended to educate people about the lynching of Leonard Woods, a Black miner from Jenkins, who was accused of shooting a white mine foreman in November 1927. Woods was broken out of the Letcher County Jail by a mob numbering in the hundreds and was taken to Pound Gap where he was hanged, shot, and burned. His murder led Virginia to pass the first anti-lynching law in the nation. (Photo by Sam Adams)
