Maurice Lewis dies in Wilmore



Former Whitesburg businessman Maurice Judson Lewis, 96, died December 27 at his home in Wilmore.

A son of the late Martin D. and Nancy Jane Caudill Lewis and the widower of Mary Emma Lewis, he was a graduate of Georgetown College. He worked at Lewis Wholesale Company, Inc. in Whitesburg until its liquidation in 1990.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the personnel office of the 1524th Service Unit with final assignment at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Ind.

He was a longtime member of the Whitesburg Lions Club, where he had been president and treasurer, and the First Baptist Church of Whitesburg. He attended North Fork Baptist Church in Whitesburg and Mount Freedom Baptist Church in Wilmore.

Surviving are three children, Gertrude Anne Lewis Weber, Wilmore; Martin Weakley Lewis and wife Kaye, Lake Wylie, S.C.; and Sue Lucille Lewis Raymond, Louisville; grandchildren, Joel Mark Weber and wife Bonita, Wilmore; Derek Martin Lewis, Charleston, S. C.; Keven Folkers Lewis, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Emily Anne Raymond Ware and husband Matt, Independence, Mo.; greatgrandchildren, Mark Philip Weber, Levi William Weber, William Alexander Ware and Blake Matthew Ware; and a half-brother, Marvin Douglas Lewis.

Funeral services were held January 2 at the First Baptist Church in Whitesburg. Burial was in Sandlick Cemetery.
