McConnell becomes Ky.’s longest serving Senator

When Republican Mitch McConnell was elected to the U.S. Senate more than 24 years ago, he didn’t think he’d ever be where he is today.

The Senate’s minority leader began his 25th year in the Senate on Jan. 10, making him Kentucky’s longest serving Senator. He passes Wendell Ford who served on the Senate from 1975 to 1999.

McConnell was elected in 1985 and says that as a new member of the Senate, he was seated in the back of the chamber in a poorly lit corner. He says that back then he thought that none of the Senators who outranked him would ever die, retire or be defeated. (AP)
