To the Editor:
The U.S. Postal Service has served notice to the customers of the Jackhorn and Deane Post Offices of a proposal to consolidate these offices into the Neon Post Office. It is doing so under provisions of the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 and federal law, and over our objections.
Under provisions of the act, the Postal Service is obligated to provide a maximum degree of effective and regular postal service to rural areas, communities and small towns where post offices are not self-sustaining. The Postal Service’s proposed action will not serve the best interests of our postal customers.
A community meeting will be held Oct. 3, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Hemphill Community Center concerning the possible closings of these two offices. Postal representatives will be present to answer questions and provide information.
Local citizens served by the Jackhorn and Dean offices should seriously consider the consequences of the Postal Service’s proposal and be prepared to voice their concerns at this meeting. PHYLLIS WRIGHT
