Surrounded by family and friends, Michal Heron passed peacefully in hospice in Sarasota, Fla., on March 6, after a brief battle against cancer.
Born Virginia Michal Heron on April 28, 1936 to William J. and Virginia Lemrow Heron in New York City, N.Y., Michal grew up in West Orange, N.J.
She was a highly-regarded photographer, traveling the world as a pioneering female in the field. Her many assignments included photographing emergency medical technicians for training textbooks, children for a published book on portraiture, Native Americans in the Southwest and her friends of Kingscreek, in the Appalachian mountains.
She lived for most of her adult life in New York City and on her beloved farm in the Catskills, until recently settling in Sarasota, Fla. She loved to travel, hitting many spots around the globe.
Michal Heron was a vibrant, loving stepmom, sister, and friend. She had a passion for her family, generously inviting friends and family to stay at her homes. Known for being exceptionally kind and caring, she helped and influenced so many people. She will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of enjoying her company both professionally and personally.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her longtime partner, Bob Richards. She is survived by her beloved stepsons, Paul Richards and wife Jennie of Newark, Oh., Keith Richards and wife Caroline of Sheboygan, Wis., and Theo Chewiwi of Sarasota; four grandchildren, Katie, Molly, Emily, and Sara and husband Kevin; and great-grandchildren Courtney and Shaun; her siblings, William J. Heron, Jr., and wife Vicky, Ann Heron and Tom Prendergast, of Sarasota, Fla., and Molly Heron and Bill Hampton; a niece, Ali Heron and Gustavo; a nephew, William J. Heron III and wife Sonya; and great-nieces Laura and Erika.
Her family wishes to thank the kind, caring, and professional staff at Tidewell Hospice who eased her last days.
