Letcher County native Wilburn Hampton, who now lives in Eugene, Ore., will celebrate his 103rd birthday April 10.
Hampton is the son of the late Joseph and Mickadove ‘Mickey’ Hampton. His father died after being hit by a car at Millstone in 1945, and his mother died around 1972 in Toledo, Ohio. He has a sister, Ada, and a brother, Wade. Two other brothers, George and Martin, have died.
Hampton was a coal miner for 15 years. After he married the late Mary Hampton, the couple moved to Lincoln, Neb., where for 33 years he built boxcars for a railroad company, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad.
After his wife’s death in 1969, he married the late Norma Fredickson. He now lives in the Sheldon Park Assisted Living Center in Eugene.
