Miner, 32, killed in mishap here




A coal miner from Beefhide died last week after the rock truck he was operating backed over an embankment and overturned at Friday Branch, between Ermine and Mayking.

Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Cabinet spokesman Dick Brown said the accident that killed 32-year-old Jeremy L. Stewart at about 8 a.m. on May 21 happened at a mine operated by J&A Mining Inc.

U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere said federal mine inspectors are continuing to nvestigate.

The coal fatality is the second of the year in Kentucky and the sixth of the year in the United States. All have occurred at surface mines.

Stewart was the son of Audy and Marie Addington Stewart, and was preceded in death by his grandfather, Noble Addington.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Diane Stewart; two sons, Jeremy Austin Stewart and Jarett Brent Stewart; and his grandparents, Bennie and Fannie Stewart, and Etta Addington.

Funeral services were held May 25 in Virgie. Burial followed in the Addington family cemetery at Brushy Fork.
