Minor league hoops team to call Expo Center home

PIKEVILLE

The Continental Basketball Association is coming to eastern Kentucky.

The league awarded an expansion franchise to an ownership group headed by former Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler. The team, called the East Kentucky Miners, will begin play at the East Kentucky Expo Center next fall.

The expansion will be formally announced on July 19, according to a release. The team is owned by Trinity Sports & Entertainment Group, co-founded by Fiedler and Demetrius Ford. The group also owns the CBA’s Indiana Alley Cats.

Kevin Keathley, 29, an eastern Kentucky native, will coach the Miners. Keathley most recently worked as an assistant coach for the ABA’s Rio Grande (Texas) Silverados.

“I want to see Pikeville, Pike County, other surrounding counties and all of eastern Kentucky jump on board and call this professional basketball team their own,” Keithley said.

Eight teams competed in the CBA last year. The Yakima Sun Kings defeated the Albany Patroons for the league title.
