Whitesburg school news, March 1955

On Wednesday, March 9, Mr. Hamilton Tapp, from the University of Kentucky, gave an interesting lecture to the Whitesburg High School seniors on college and careers for graduating seniors.

Thursday, March 11, Mr. Chester Mielcarek, educational director of Kentucky Division of American Cancer Society gave a most interesting lecture on the work that is being done to combat this disease.

Tuesday, March 15, an assembly program planned by the Whitesburg Pep Club was held honoring the coaches and players of the Whitesburg High School basketball team. The program consisted of band music, A Yellowjacket Dance by the following grade students from the tap dancing class: Kay Daniel, Jerry Nolan, Barbara Bentley and Frankie Jones. Presentation of the district runner-up trophy by Coach Ray Pigman to the school was accepted by Kendall Boggs, principal. Mr. Boggs commended the coaches, the team for their hard work, their courage and determination displayed throughout the basketball season. He complimented the band, the Pep Club and the entire student body for the support given their teams throughout the year.

Friday, March 18, at 1 o’clock the junior boys will play the senior boys in a donkey basketball game. This game is sponsored by the Whitesburg Jaycees who have agreed to donate 20 percent of the net proceeds to the senior class to aid their Washington trip.

On Wednesday, March 23, at 8:30 a style show and talent program will be given for the benefit of the American Red Cross. Admission will be 10 cents. The program will be repeated at 9:30 for the high school. The public is invited to attend either of these performances. Admission will be 10 cents.

The latest fashions from Dawahare’s, The Vogue Shop and Craft’s will be modeled by Whitesburg grade and high school students. Come out and help a worthy cause.
