On Jan.13, 14, and 15, the Lady Yellowjackets were at the Lady Kat Invitational Tournament, running their way through three big city teams on their way to another invitational tournament, their fourth of the season in as many entries. They put away Lexington Bryan Station 46-40, Lexington Henry Clay51-45 in overtime, and Casey County, 51-41 in the final. Rated fourth in the state, they have extended their wins to 21 against no losses. They have averaged 70.4 ppg, and their opponents have averaged 40.6 ppg. Lady Jackets end their season undefeated, posting wins over
Johnson Central and
The Lady Yellowjackets of WHS closed out their regular season at 31-0 overall and at different times this season have been rated as the No. 1. On Wednesday they were rated in the AP poll as the No. 2 girls’ team in the state, and out of the top 15 teams in the state, the only team that hasn’t lost a game. The Jackets also are rated as the No. 1 team in the 14th Region and the 53rd District.
The Lady Jackets put together a big victory over Johnson Central, winning game No. 30, and defeated the visiting team 115 to 36 on Monday night and in a afternoon game on Wednesday before the entire student body of WHS, the Lady Jackets defeated Powell County, 110-22.
Tiphanie Bates, a senior guard, the leading scorer for the Lady Jackets with a total of 637 points for her senior year, scored 26 points in the Jacket win over Johnson Central. Sandy Brown, a junior forward, scored 23 points, Thelma Witt 14, Brigette Combs 14, Teresa Gibson 13, Patricia Baker 7, Rhuelena Breeding 7, Regina Holbrook 6, Sandy Luther 2, Donna Holbrook 2, Damaris Adams 1.
Sandy Brown and Thelma Witt each scored 20 points to lead the Lady Jackets in their win over Powell County. Brown and Witt were joined by teammates Tiphanie Bates and Brigette Combs each having 15 points. Rhuelena Breeding had 12, Patsy Stallard 7, Regina Holbrook 7, Teresa Gibson 5, Patricia Baker 4, Pam Nelson 4, Sandy Luther 1.
