Mr. and Miss Whitesburg High is an honor awarded to a senior boy and girl on the basis of leadership ability, scholastic standing and character. This year the honor goes to Richard York and Priscilla Boggs.

The Harris Award is named in honor of Professor H.H. Harris, who served as Principal of Whitesburg High School from 1919 until 1927. It is awarded by the faculty on the basis of leadership, character, and scholastic standing. This year’s recipient is Commodore Craft, Jr. Football game Saturday

Fifty-five candidates for the Whitesburg Yellowjackets 1962 football squad will end their spring practice Saturday night with an intrasquad game at the athletic field. The game will start at 8 p.m. and admission will be free.

Coaches Gardner Bates, Roma Rader and Bobby Kincer term the spring practice “very successful.”

Several young boys have made “very fine progress,” they said. They singled out freshmen Donald Dixon (185 pounds), Larry York, Douglas Chandler, Andrea Collins, Stevie Frazier and Donald Fields as looking “very good.”

Varsity candidates mentioned by the coaches include J.D. Jones, who has been moved to end and is “coming along fine”; Ricky Fields, whose “blocking has been superb,” and Delano Thomas, who has “had a very fine spring practice.”

The squad has been divided into 28-man groups for the game Saturday night.

The white team will feature the hard running of Delano Thomas. Hiram Wright and Ricky Fields will anchor the white line. Jerry Coots, Ronald Day and Newton Sexton will lead the black team. Jimmy Stamper, all-conference tackle, and J.D. Jones will anchor the black.

Athletics Banquet

Matt Lair, assistant football coach at the University of Kentucky, will be guest speaker at the annual Whitesburg High School athletics banquet Saturday night at the school gymnasium.

The Rev. Robert S. Owens Jr., pastor of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, will serve as toastmaster. The Rev. Charles Carter will give the invocation and the Rev. Raymond Collins will give the benediction.

A quartet under the direction of Frank Bickel will provide music. Members are Rocky Davis, Jackie Collins, Lloyd Price, Jr. and Roger Blair.

Ted Cook, Whitesburg athletics director, will introduce Lair.

Martin Dawahare will present a trophy to be awarded by his firm to the school’s outstanding athlete.
