Poet’s Page: Just Luck by Ruby June Adams

Gosh Mom, I sure am lucky,

Just as lucky as can be,

Nope, I didn’t make an A today

Didn’t even make a C.

You’re wrong, it wasn’t that, Mom,

I didn’t win a prize

It isn’t new at all, I’d say,

Just an old but good surprise.

No, I didn’t find a nickel

Or my busted, old football

Ah gee, I think you’re so dumb

It’s nothing like that at all.

Of course my Daddy knows it

Come on, just one more guess!

Gee Whiz, you’re wrong again, Mom,

I might as well confess.

Even all the neighbors know it

And I guess that you do too,

It’s just that I think I’m lucky

‘Cause I was born to you.

Seasons, by Jeanette Wampler:

Each man has his day

A renowned poet once wrote,

Also each season has its play

This lowly poet now quotes.

Each season seems the best of all

As each comes in its turn,

Winter, spring, summer, and fall

All help us to live and to learn.

(The above poems from the 1946 Whitesburg High School Yearbook.)
