Jackets win region, travel to state tourney
Sophomore point guard Hillary Swisher connected on three pressurepacked free throws late in the fourth quarter to help the Whitesburg Lady Yellowjackets secure a 54-51 win over the Leslie County Lady Eagles for the championship of the 14th Region.
The win gave Whitesburg its first trip to the girls’ State Tournament since 1985. The Lady ‘Jackets will meet 3rd Region champion Owensboro Apollo tonight (Wednesday). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 in Frankfort’s Farnham-Dudgeon Arena.
After fighting to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Yellowjackets appeared ready to put Leslie County away when forward Tracy Ison scored nine quick points to help Whitesburg to an 11-point lead midway through the second quarter.
However, the Jackets saw the lead diminish after coach John High took Ison out of the game for the last three minutes of the second half to keep Ison from picking up her second foul.
“We started tossing the ball away and not hitting the offensive boards,” High said of a drought that saw Leslie County fight back to a 30-30 tie at halftime.
In the third quarter, senior forward Alicia Combs scored eight points to help the Lady Jackets take a 45- 43 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the lead changed hands several times before Whitesburg took control for good on a Swisher free throw. She later iced the win when she connected on two more free throws.
The free throws and a field goal gave Swisher five points in a quarter that saw Whitesburg score only nine. Denney Breeding also hit a clutch free throw during the period, while Ison scored one field goal and a free throw.
For the game, Whitesburg hit on 10 of 18 free throws. Leslie County connected on 14 of 24 tosses from the charity stripe.
