Moments and Memories of WHS

Whitesburg High School
Part I

Mr. Alan Siegel came to Whitesburg High School to begin directing the Whitesburg High School band in 1967. During the 2 1/2 years under Mr. Siegel, the band performed halftime shows at football games, pep band at basketball games, annual Christmas concerts, participated in Eastern Kentucky University band day, homecoming parades of Fleming-Neon High, Jenkins High and Whitesburg High Schools, Miss Letcher County Pageant and southeastern Kentucky music association band festival at Williamsburg. Mr. Siegel’s last spring concert was May 11, 1969. At that time there were approximately 40 band members. Clayshan Caudill commanded the marching band during the ‘67-‘68 marching band season. Larry Mullins became Drum Major for the band during the ‘68-‘69 marching band season. Majorettes during Mr. Siegel’s term were Karen Adams, Janie Adams, Barbara Hunsaker and Karen Kincer for the ‘67-‘68 season and Cathy Wampler, Barbara Hunsaker, Karen Kincer and Glenda Younce ‘68-‘69 season.

True to her WHS 1962 senior ambitions, Mina Breeding became a music teacher and returned to Whitesburg High School to become the new band director of Whitesburg High School Band in 1969.

Members of the band met their new band director at the WHS football field during the early summer of 1969. Unsure what to expect, we quickly became acquainted with Miss Breeding’s style of marching, ankle to the knee. There was a lot of hard work and sweat for the first summer of band camp with Miss Breeding. Finally, under the direction of Drum Major Larry Mullins, we executed our first half-time show, this was just the beginning! That year the band participated in the Veterans of Foreign Wars invitational band contest in Cumberland with 18 of the Tri-States’ outstanding high school bands representing Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. For many of the WHS band members this was a first marching band competition but would not be the last!

Majorettes for 1969-70 were Linda Craiger, Pam Honeycutt, Lee Anna Mullins, Terri Greene, and Cathy Wampler Majorettes were used for basketball halftime entertainment. During our spring concert 1970, we had as our guest conductor Mr. John Bastolla, band director of Fleming- Neon Band. During this concert, our senior band members were recognized for their many years with the Whitesburg Band. The seniors of 1970 were Larry Mullins, Drum Major and clarinet player, Betty Whitaker flute, Terena Napier clarinet, Linda Craiger alto saxophone, Lumpy Newsome trombone, Curt Casolari tuba, and Gary Campbell percussion.

Pam Honeycutt and Caron Crawford became the marching band Field Commanders for the 1970- 1971 school year. We had 42 members of the band. Majorettes were Lee Anna Mullins, Terri Greene, Maggi Fields, Charlene Williams and Cordelia Collins. The majorettes performed at half-time during basketball games and during parades. During our spring concert of 1971, we recognized our senior band members: Terry York, Dean Collins, Wayne Watts, Jeff Everidge, Chester Holbrook, Pam Honeycutt, Barbara Shackelford, Linda Fields, Gary Miles, Jeff Taylor, and Judy Younce.
