All the seniors would like to welcome the new teachers — first Miss Jan Combs, who graciously agreed to teach shorthand and believe me about 50 girls are really here.

Mr. Gardner Bates, Jr. is teaching typing and will serve as an assistant coach. Then we must not forget Mr. R.C. Day, who will be teaching science and Mrs. Joy Wray Breeding who will teach math and French.

I know everyone at W.H.S. is happy to have Mr. Jack Taylor back with us. We’re looking forward to seeing the Orange and Black Marching Band take the title of the best marching band once more.

We are sorry to lose such an experienced teacher and sweet man as Mr. W.L. Stallard, who has retired due to his ill health.

Aug. 31 is the first football game of the season. At the pep meeting on Aug. 29 the whole school proved they’re behind the team all the way. Thanks to the pep of our very able cheerleaders, Edith Logan, Donna Spangler, Wanda Collier and Wanda Rodgers. Hope all W.H.S. students will be on hand at the downtown pep rally through Main Street on Thursday night at 6:30. The Journalism Class, around 15 or 20 members this year, is composed of all girls, except two — James Stidham and Don Walker. The class was moved to the first floor of the high school building because there were too many complaints of the Kat staff disturbing study hall when they were out catting around for news for the paper.

I guess the pep rally must have put a lot of spirit into those grand football boys of ours. Friday night the Yellowjackets really stung Napier — 65-7. The downpour of rain didn’t dampen the spirit of the team. So, let’s go Yellowjackets and beat Paintsville the same way.

RANDALL DAY

RANDALL DAY

The beauty contest which took place at Allen as part of the Labor Day Celebration was a huge success. We were very glad to hear Miss Phyllis Hall was second-place winner. The three winners and possibly all other contestants will appear on television. Whitesburg alumnae, Ramona Sparks and Norma Dere Cole, and former student Shelbea Lucas were entered along with Pat Fulton, who is a senior “on the hill” this year. Girls, we’re proud of you all. Tuesday, the lockers were given out. Miss Dugan and the F.H.A. girls, who are always on hand to help out, did a very good job of issuing locks again this year. We’re glad to see so many of the small, more convenient and neater lockers replace the old wooden ones in the hall of the high school building.

Tuesday, Mr. Boggs made an announcement concerning speeding up the hill. He informed us that the police and mayor had decided to issue fines to anyone speeding up the hill. So, if you kids wish to continue bringing your cars to school, my advice is to “slow down” on College Hill.

I believe Mr. Boggs is the most sought-after man in Whitesburg at this time. It seems as if every time someone opens his mouth, he’s asking for Mr. Boggs. So, imagine yourself in his place. I’ll bet we could never keep such a pleasant disposition if we had his responsibility.

The senior class has already selected theme subjects and soon we’ll be overcrowding our inadequate library for information. I guess the upperclassmen have already found this out but I’ll clue you freshmen that we have a very efficient librarian, Mrs. Polly, who is a very sweet woman. I’m sure she’ll offer all the help that she can possibly give.

We have a game room period in the morning as well as afternoon this year. A devotional is given in each room in the morning. We are all looking forward to hearing an inspiring devotional on the public address system each morning by the Hi-Y Club under the super direction of Mr. Jim Preston, who did such a nice job last year.
