Whitesburg High reports this week (October 4) by Faith Armstrong

The main event of the past week was the twoday vacation enjoyed by the students, while all teachers attended the inservice training program on the 18th and 19th of September. A committee from the Senior class sold coffee, homemade candy and cakes to the teachers. The car used for Driver’s Educational courses, a yellow Tempest, has arrived on the hill for our new courses taught by Mr. William Richardson. Friday was a big day for the Senior class — the election of class officers. President, Tim Adams; Vice President, Sammy Kiser; Secretary, Faith Armstrong; Treasurer, Sandra Sexton. The week ended not so joyously for Whitesburg students, because our Yellowjackets were defeated by the Hazard Bulldogs 32-6.

Our Assistant Principal

Mr. Ted Cook, born at Democrat, Ky. later moved to Whitesburg and was graduated from Whitesburg High School. He attended Eastern State College and Indiana State where he graduated with his A.B. and M.A. degrees. Mr. Cook’s plan for the future is the same thing he is doing now — working for schools. When asked why he is teaching he said, “Because I am prepared to teach.” He likes Whitesburg High and hopes to be here for a long time. He is the Assistant Principal and likes this line of work better than teaching. Compared to other schools Mr. Cook said, “Whitesburg is about the same.” This year he and Miss Pat Back were married. She is also a teacher at Whitesburg High and well known because she taught here in ‘58-59. Mr. Cook has two fine children by a former marriage. His hobbies are hunting, fishing, and golf. His favorite television programs are Wells Fargo and the Flintstones. He likes the color green because it is the color of money. When asked his favorite food dish he replied, “Plenty of any kind.” The type of student he likes is the average student. He doesn’t like smart alecks.
