Shirley Frazier Breeding was born May 1, 1937 at Whitesburg to Boone and Dorotha Adams Frazier. She passed from this life on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Whitesburg ARH. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Jack Breeding and James Breeding, sister Phyllis Sturgill, and stepdaughter Shirley Ann Sexton.
Shirley married Jack Breeding in 1956 and he preceded her in death in 1974. They had two daughters — Sherie Caudill (Terry) and Jackie Joseph (Mike). In 1976 she married James Breeding and became stepmother to Larry (Barbara) and Shirley Ann, who preceded her in death in 1988.
In addition to her daughters and stepson, she is survived by five grandchildren, Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Dustin and Zach, and four great-grandchildren, Kate, Wyatt, Carter and Mya, as well as a multitude of friends and loved ones.
Shirley was a graduate of Lees Junior College, Pikeville College and Morehead State University. She was a devoted lifetime educator. She taught primary school in Letcher County (Millstone, Cow Branch, Colson/ Beckham Bates and West Whitesburg) for 37 years. After her retirement, she returned to the West Whitesburg Writing to Read program for six years.
Shirley was a devoted Christian and a member of the Isom Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She served as the pianist, choir leader, Women of the Church member, and primary “church bulletin and greeting card” distributor. If the Isom Presbyterian Church was open — Shirley was there.
Shirley was a volunteer with the Letcher County Food Pantry. She served as a board member for the Whitesburg ARH Home Health agency. She was longtime member of the Whitesburg ARH Auxiliary, and was honored as ARH Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year. She continued to make pillows for all inpatient surgical patients to the time of her passing.
She was a faithful caregiver to her family and friends and a loyal contributor to many charities.
She would ask all her friends and family not to mourn her passing, but to get out there and see what they can do for someone in need.
Funeral services for Shirley were to be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Isom Presbyterian Church with Duane Beachey officiating. Burial was to follow in the Breeding Family Cemetery, also at Isom.
A Celebration of Life for Shirley Breeding will be held at a later date. The Celebration will be a time of fellowship, singing and sharing good food, all of which Shirley loved.
If anyone has any anecdotes about Shirley they would like to share at the Celebration, they can share themselves or forward them to Sherie or Jackie via phone, email, or mail for sharing.
Please bring a dish and plan to come and join the Celebration of the life of a truly special lady.
