A judge was expected to decide today (Wednesday) whether authorities have enough evidence to pursue an indictment against a Letcher County man who is charged with murdering his neighbor.

Bobby G. Collins, 36, of Deane, is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing in Letcher District Court at 10:30 a.m. Collins was arrested on Independence Day by Kentucky State Police and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of 37-year-old Mark “Bocky” Adams.

Adams was pronounced dead at 12:12 a.m. on July 4 at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn., where he was transported by helicopter from the Beckham Bates Elementary Colson for treatment of a shotgun wound to his stomach. The shooting occurred at 9:52 p.m. on July 3 at Collins’s home at 335 Cherokee Drive, police say.

Authorities were busy this week still trying to piece together the events that led up to the shooting, which occurred about two hours after police had gone to Adams’s home, also on Cherokee Drive, to answer a complaint about a domestic disturbance involving Adams and his girlfriend.

A source familiar with the investigation said Adams was able to evade capture by sheriff’s deputies who answered the first call, then returned to the neighborhood later and began arguing with the girlfriend a second time – at the home of Collins.

“What happened next is up in the air,” the source said, adding that detectives are trying to determine whether Collins fired a warning shot in the direction of Adams before the fatal blast struck him.

State police say they learned of the shooting when a neighbor called to report “a possible domestic dispute at 335 Cherokee Drive in the Deane community.” Police say the neighbor “also advised he thought he heard a gunshot.”

The investigation is continuing under the direction KSP Detective Randy Combs.

According to court records, Adams was charged in four incidents involving allegations of domestic violence against three separate women between 2002 and 2005. Two of the charges were later dismissed.

Funeral services for Adams were held July 11 at Letcher Funeral Home in Whitesburg.
