Murder trial delayed again

The trial of the first of two suspects charged in a January 1, 2014 stabbing death in downtown Whitesburg has been delayed again.

The trial of Patrick C. Smith was set to begin in Letcher Circuit Court on March 17, but was continued by order of Special Judge Kent Hendrickson of Harlan County last week after Smith’s attorney, Tom Griffiths, moved to Seattle, Washington.

Smith and co-defendant James Huffman IV, both of Pike County, are charged with complicity to murder, attempted murder and other charges in the death of Michael Hogg, who was killed in a dispute that grew out of a New Year’s Eve celebration.

What, if any, effect the delay of Smith’s trial will have on Huffman’s trial, which is set for April, could not be determined at Mountain Eagle press time.
