Music, food highlight New Year’s events here




St. Louis soul artist Brian Owens returns to Summit City in Whitesburg Thursday night for a special New Year’s Eve show. An Army veteran who has sung the National Anthem at the World Series, Owens and his crack band perform originals as well as covers of songs by other soul musicians including Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye.

Some New Year’s Eve events planned in Letcher County include the following:

At American Legion Post #152, Pine Mountain — State of Mind Band, Thursday, 9 p.m. – 1 a.m. Hors d’oeuvres, champagne toast at midnight, $10 per person. Must be 21 or older to attend, 633-2834.

At Hemphill Community Center — Highway 23 and Gina Seals- Sparks, Thursday, 9 p.m. – midnight. Food and drinks included in $10 admission, ages five and under free, 855-7567.

At Heritage Kitchen, Whitesburg

— Dinner served until 8 p.m. Thursday; bar will remain open until

champagne toast at midnight (while supplies last). On Saturday (January 2) open mic starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 11 p.m. Dinner service ends at 8 p.m., with lighter bar food menu from 8-10. Full bar service until midnight.

. Letcher County Kids Day Committee’s New Year’s Eve Charity Ball at Pine Mountain Grill banquet room — Entertainment will be provided by DJ Winston Lee. Doors open at 7 p.m. Thursday. Food and drinks will be served starting at 8 p.m. Admission is

Shrimp cocktail, chocolate sauce with strawberries and whipped cream, chocolate eclair bites, caprese tomato bites, cheese balls, ham rolls, variety of olives, meats, cheese, pita bread, and bite sized pimento cheese sandwiches, and midnight champagne toast.
