Nearly New Shop closes

Because of a decline in thrift store revenue and increased competition, the Nearly New Shop, operated by Hospice of the Bluegrass – Mountain Community, closed its doors for the final time July 13.

A part of Hazard-Perry County for many years, the thrift store was a resource for the community. “The terrific support the thrift store has received since opening has been generous and greatly appreciated. Donations of items, the patrons who came to shop and of course, the valuable staff and volunteers, are tremendous examples of the kindness we have seen through the years,” states Monica Couch, the director of Hospice of the Bluegrass— Mountain Community. HOB will donate the remaining items from the thrift store to other community resources for local use.

Hospice provides care to terminally ill patients, their families and those grieving. The organization serves Perry, Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, Letcher, Morgan and Wolfe counties.

HOB is also in the process of building a freestanding hospice inpatient facility located in The Cove area on Miss Edna Lane in Hazard. The proposed design of the 20,000 sq. ft. facility will have 12 home-like patient rooms, with space for visitors and additional areas for family members to stay overnight. The building will also contain dining facilities and support service offices. It is the first of its kind for Hospice of the Bluegrass, and a first for southeastern Kentucky.
