”The Electricity Fairy”, a new documentary by Appalshop filmmaker Tom Hansell, will be shown on KET’s Kentucky channel, KETKY, at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 3. It will be re-broadcast at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, and at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9.
The film examines America’s national addiction to fossil fuels through electricity. Coal produces half of U.S. electricity, according to the federal Department of Energy, and the impact is highly visible in the Appalachian region.
Hansell follows the story of a proposed coal-fired plant in the mountains of southwest Virginia, connecting the local controversy to the national debate over energy policy. Present day documentary footage and old educational films reveal the costs of living with coal.
