New device able to deliver radiation much faster

Pikeville Medical Center is now able to offer a precise form of radiation therapy that is delivered two to eight times faster than conventional technologies.

The hospital has purchased a $5 million Varian RapidArc Linear Accelerator, which delivers radiation doses more quickly and with great accuracy.

The RapidArc treatment therapy takes about 90 seconds to complete once a patient has been positioned for treatment, much faster than other forms of treatment that can take up to 20 minutes or longer per session.

“This technology continues the Leonard Lawson Cancer Center’s role as the region’s medical leader in offering cancer patients access to treatments that can improve outcomes by doing a better job of sparing healthy tissue while delivering more powerful radiation doses to tumors,” said Terence Farrell, vice president of Professional and Support Services at Pikeville Medical Center.
