With football season in full swing, sports fans now have a place in downtown Whitesburg to watch their game of choice.

StreetSide Grill & Bar has six 42-inch LCD flat screen televisions mounted on a wall near the 36-foot-long bar and 15 bar stools. On the other side of the restaurant is a 10-foot LCD projection screen. A foosball table, pool table, dartboard and a jukebox are also on hand.

“I always sell the entertainment factor,” said Charlie Wright, owner of the StreetSide Grill & Bar which opened on Main Street last week. “My favorite things are definitely the gaming, entertainment and the TVs.”

Wright, who is a grandson of the late Letcher County Court Clerk for whom he is named, said Whitesburg has needed a place for people who want to get out of their houses and go watch sports with friends.

“There was an empty gap for somewhere to go watch ballgames,” he said.

Another unique feature of the restaurant is the patio seating right in the middle of downtown.

After spending two years renovating the first floor of the old Craft’s Department Store building, Wright hosted a soft opening September 8 for friends and family. His business has been opened each night since from 6 p.m. until midnight, excluding Sunday night. Wright said once he and his staff get into a flow the restaurant will open for lunch — probably in about another week.

The appetizer menu includes onion rings, Buffalo cheese sticks, mozzarella cheese sticks, jalapeño bottle caps, zucchini slices, spicy pub pickles and French fries. Sandwiches include StreetSide burger, jalapeño burger, chicken sandwich, club sandwich, and BBQ chicken sandwich. Chef and garden salads are also on the menu. Boneless wings and chicken breasts are available with nine different sauces ranging from teriyaki to hot.

Wright said even though his business has a large bar, it is definitely a family-friendly atmosphere. He pointed out that many children have eaten there with their families since it opened last week.

The restaurant has about 4,000 square feet of space inside and 1,000 square feet of space with the patio.

Wright has paid much attention to detail. Through eBay, he found some old, wooden doors in Tulsa, Oklahoma that were once used on the 55th floor of a bank building. He flew to Tulsa and drove back with a truckload of doors, which vary in design. Some of the booths were found at a Habitat for Humanity store in Cincinnati.
