New tax takes effect

A procedural change has taken effect when Kentucky taxpayers title or register certain property purchased outside the state.

There is now a 6 percent use tax on items purchased from retail from out-of-state vendors such boats, trailers, all-terrain vehicles, and manufactured homes when the property is presented for titling or first-time registration at the county clerk’s office. The 6 percent tax is equal to the sales tax imposed on in-state purchases. The county clerk will allow credit for out-of-state sales tax previously paid on the property.

For more information, call the Division of Sales at Use Tax at (502) 564-5170 or e-mail KRCWebresponseSalesTax@ky.gov.
