Norman to speak at writers conference

GURNEY NORMAN

GURNEY NORMAN

Gurney Norman, author of Kinfolks and Divine Right’s Trip, will lead sessions at this year’s Spring Writers Conference at Hazard Community and Technical College. The conference, held on April 18, consists of three concurrent workshops. The writing workshops will be held simultaneously at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. This is the college’s 12th annual conference and Norman has been involved since its inception.

“I just love working in Hazard,” says Norman, “It’s an opportunity, really, to spend substantial time with the people and the voices of Hazard. And it’s a great chance for me to work with writers I haven’t had a chance to meet or I haven’t worked with in a while. It’s a great time and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Norman is also the editor of An American Vein and Back Talk from Appalachia: Confronting Stereotypes.

Short story writer Crystal Wilkinson and poet Diane Gilliam Fisher will also serve as session leaders this year. And, at lunchtime, musician Hugh X Lewis will perform and lead a discussion. Hazard’s Spring Writers Conference is free and open to anyone interested in writing.
