Omer Champion dies at 79


Funeral services for Omer Gene Champion, 79, of Sergent, were held July 23 in Whitesburg. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine.

Born in Seco to the late Ardell and Christine Patrick Champion, he died July 20 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.

He was a brother of the late Linda Stafford.

He was a member of the Millstone Missionary Baptist Church for more than 40 years, and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Surviving are his wife, Verdia Joe Champion; two daughters, Melody Jo Webb and husband Chris of Zebulan, N.C., and Melissa “Missy” Jane Baker and husband Rondall of Thornton; a son, Omer Jene “Champ” Champion and wife Misty of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; a brother, Ricky Champion and wife Debbie of Bill Moore Branch; and five grandchildren, Holly Webb and husband Jordan, Sydney Jo Webb, Dylan Webb, Cody Baker and Omer Gene “Tripp” Champion III.
