One person is dead and one was injured in a collision on U.S. 119 North at Mayking Monday morning, Kentucky State Police said.
The incident occurred about 10:00 a.m. just north of the Dollar General Store on US 119. While the accident was originally reported to police as involving three vehicles, KSP now says only two were involved.
Kentucky State Police said David Day, 30, of Whitesburg was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer South toward Whitesburg on US 119 when he crossed into the northbound lane and struck a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox head-on.
The driver of the equinox, Lowell Ison, 75,of Jeremiah, was pronounced dead at the scene. Day was taken by ambulance to Whitesburg ARH Hospital and then flown to Pikeville Medical Center. Police say there were no other passengers involved.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Toxicology tests are pending.
Traffic was blocked for about three hours and rerouted from the Mayking Fire Department to Kona while police reconstructed the collision. Trooper Adam Baker is in charge of the investigation.
