In a letter mailed Tuesday to Letcher County Board Education Chairman Robert Kiser, The Mountain Eagle requests that a “work session” scheduled to be held behind closed doors next week be open to the public instead.
At its regular April meeting on Monday, the board scheduled the work session for 6 p.m. on April 29, and said it could discuss proposed cuts to the district’s operating budget and personnel matters in private before addressing them again in public.
In the letter to Chairman Kiser, Eagle reporter Sally Barto points out that Kentucky’s Open Meetings Laws do not permit budget discussions and general personnel matters to be held in private.
Barto told Kiser that if the board insists on meeting in private, The Eagle would file a formal complaint with the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office.
A copy of the letter was also mailed to Letcher County School Board Attorney Darrell Hall.
