The sixth grade boys’ basketball team at E. J. Hayes Middle School in Lexington won six consecutive games on March 1 to win the sixth grade district tournament championship, which was held at Bryan Station Middle School gymnasium. E. J. Hayes Elementary School defeated Morton Middle School in back-to-back games in the finals of the double elimination tournament to win the district title. The team is coached by Letcher County native Tyler Bentley who is pictured at far left. Bentley is a sixth grade Social Studies teacher at E. J. Hayes. He is the son of Margaret Hammonds of Whitesburg and Ronnie Bentley of Mayking. He is married to Kimberly Smith Bentley who teaches fourth grade at Meadowthorpe Elementary School in Lexington.
