The Letcher County Central High School JROTC traveled to Gray, Tenn., Jan. 16 to compete in the 2016 Daniel Boone High School Drill Competition with 25 other schools. The LCCHS cadets won first place in the Personnel Inspection event. On Jan. 23, LCCHS will go to the University of Kentucky for another drill competition. The cadets, 1SG Wayne Watts and SFC Michael Sexton expressed gratitude to the community for helping the group raise money to attend the competitions.

We have a little bit of snow as I write this, and the temperatures are supposed to be the coldest of this winter so far.

No wonder some people go to Florida for the winter. It’s hard to deal with cold weather.

Melanie Caudill is getting over her recent knee surgery with Jeff ’s help. She had it done at Prestonsburg and, after staying in the hospital for three nights, was released and is recovering at home. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Melanie.

Allen and Sylvania Whitaker have a new greatgrandbaby born on Jan. 13. Madison looks to be a cutie with a head full of dark hair, and we’re glad that she and her momma, Tonya, are doing well. Congratulations to all the family on the new arrival.

Ollie Adams also has a new grandson, Aiden, born on Jan. 12. Baby Aiden has an older sister, Aria, and we’re glad that mother and baby are doing well. Congratulations to their entire family, too.

We had a large turnout at Blair Branch Church this past Sunday, and a very good service.

So sorry to the family of Wesley Collins, who died as the result of a logging accident. He was only 34 years old, and our deepest sympathy to his mother, Mary Jean Collins; his children, brothers and sister, and the entire family.
