Pikeville woman recipient of a rare lung transplant

A 23-year-old Pikeville woman has received a full lung transplant from a donor who had suffered “cardiac death.”

The five-hour surgery took place May 24 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and helped Rebecca Boyd, who was suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Dr. Timothy Mullett, director of the hospital’s lung transplant program, says Boyd is responsive and “looks very good.”

Doctors call the surgery a “non-heart beating donation” or a “donation after cardiac death” and consider it as a way to expand organ donations. Mullett says there were only 12 such operations in the United States last year.

Dr. Mark Bonnell and Dr. Hassan Reda also participated in the five-hour transplant operation.
