Drivers who travel Pine Mountain near Jenkins and Whitesburg can now monitor weather conditions via a webcam.
“A constituent of mine requested these cameras, which I thought were a great idea,” 94th District Rep. Leslie Combs said in announcing the webcams this week. “ This will let drivers in the area or those passing through see what to expect before they begin driving.”
The two web cameras — one located on U.S. 119 near Whitesburg and the other on U.S. 23 near Jenkins — are part of more than 150 statewide that can be accessed via the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s website at 511. ky.gov/. Once there, click on “Full Feature Map” on the left and then “Cameras.” The Letcher County cameras can then be found by zooming in on the map.
“We are excited to add these new webcams to our system,” said Chief District Engineer Mary Westfall- Holbrook, P.E. “We know they will be very beneficial during the snow and ice season so that we can monitor the roadway conditions on two of our highest peaks within our road system in District 12.”
“These are the only cameras in eastern Kentucky not on an Interstate, so I want to thank the Transportation Cabinet for listening to our request and making it happen,” Rep. Combs added. “This will be a big help as we approach the winter.”
