Pirates take tourney

Fleming-Neon won the Letcher County Middle School baseball tournament May 9 at Letcher.

In the first game, Fleming-Neon defeated Letcher, 21-3. Trevor Hardin was the winning pitcher. Manny Gibson had three runs batted in. Trevor Hardin had four RBIs, and Dakota Mullins had five.

In the final game, Fleming- Neon beat the Central Cougars, 6-3, to win the county championship. The Cougars are a consolidated team of Whitesburg Middle School, Cowan Middle School and Arlie Boggs Middle School at Eolia.

Fleming-Neon was led by winning pitcher John Potter, who only gave up two hits. Hunter Meade had two RBIs including a two-out, two-run inside the park homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Hardin had two RBIs on a triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Fleming-Neon earlier in the week beat Knott County Central 10-4, Perry Central 15-10, and Letcher 12-0. Fleming-Neon has now won 10 games in a row, improving to 15 wins and three losses on the season.
