PLANTERS

In June, community volunteers worked on assembling flower boxes, filling them with dirt and planting flowers which were placed around downtown Neon. The materials for the boxes were bought with flexi-grant money from the Appalachian Regional Commission administered through Brushy Fork Institute in Berea. This was the first project of the Economic Development Committee of Fleming-Neon. The committee worked with Dr. Lori Garkovich of the Department Community and Leadership Development at the University of Kentucky, who prepared a strategic plan for the community focusing on city beautification and business growth. The committee says it plans future activities that “will build pride into our community and aid in growing businesses, existing and new.” Above, working with plants are (front)Leah Shepherd, (left to right) Debbie Brink, Jeanette Brink and Barbie Johnson.
