Police announce safety blitz here

The Kentucky State Police said this week they will be conducting traffic safety checks in Letcher County between now and June 3.

The safety campaign entitled “Buckle Up Kentucky – It’s The Law & It’s Enforced” began on Monday in Letcher and the other four counties – Knott, Perry, Leslie and Breathitt. – served by KSP Post 13 in Hazard.

“During 2006 the national seatbelt usage rate was 81 percent, within Kentucky it was 67.2 percent,” a state police news release said. “Also, last year 913 people were killed on Kentucky highways. To reduce this number, the Kentucky State Police at Post 13, in coordination with other state and local agencies, will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints, directed patrols and speed details.”

This enforcement effort is in conjunction with the National “Click it or Ticket” campaign – an effort to reduce injury and fatality collisions within the Post 13 area by increasing seatbelt and child restraint enforcement.
