Help Kentucky State Police cram a cruiser with nonperishable foods for needy families this holiday season.
A KSP cruiser will be parked in front of Whitesburg Walmart from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. today (Wednesday). Food collected today will be donated to the Letcher County Food Pantry.
Items can also be taken to Post 13 in Hazard until Dec. 13.
KSP spokesman Trooper Paul Blanton says the agency collected more than 100,000 pounds of food during the 2012 campaign.
Last year, 2,265 pounds of food items were collected by Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation in Whitesburg. In 2011, troopers took 660 pounds of food to the food pantry.
In the fourth year of the statewide annual food drive, collection sites have been set up at all 16 KSP posts and at the agency’s headquarters in Frankfort.
Blanton says the food will be distributed to local shelters, churches and other organizations serving people in need.
Suggested donations include canned fruit and vegetables, canned meat, macaroni and cheese, cereal, peanut butter, canned soups, brownie and cake mixes, coffee, water, powdered milk and juices.
