Police say man stole money from archers while working at festival

A Whitesburg man is accused of stealing at least $500 from a food booth during the Mountain Heritage Festival over the weekend.

When questioned by police, John Kontos, 39, of 42 1st Street, admitted to taking money from food booth of the Letcher County Central High School archery team, said Letcher County Sheriff ’s Deputy Sidney Fields. Kontos told police that he didn’t know how much cash he had taken from the food booth because he also had cash payment for working in construction, Fields said.

Soon after money was reported missing from the food booth, Kontos had $513 in his pockets when police interviewed him at Kontos home on September 26, Fields said.

A volunteer working in the food booth had contacted the sheriff ’s department and reported that between $1,000 and $1,500 was missing from the archery booth. Police returned $513 to the archery team.

Kontos was arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking. He posted a $ 5,000 surety bond on September 28.
