Police say man was cutting casing pipe to sell for scrap

Police have charged a Whitesburg man with destroying casing pipe stolen from a water improvement project at Deane so he could sell it for scrap metal.

Shelbert Marion Arnett, 32, of 17 Loves Branch Road, received a one-foot by 20 foot long steel casing pipe belonging to Akins Construction, according to a police citation written by Letcher County Ranger Phillip Slone.

Value of the pipe is estimated to be around $300.

Slone said Arnett cut the pipe into four five-foot-long sections with a cutting torch for the purpose of being sold for scrap.

Arnett was arrested April 9 and charged with receiving stolen property and third-degree criminal mischief.

A $5,000 surety bond was posted April 9.
