Pollutant colors water

THE BLUE-GREEN AND WHITE TINT to Crafts Colly Creek caught the eye of passersby. The creek often has this color from an abandoned mine seep on Allen Branch, but this one came from farther up the hollow. The Division of Water was called to the creek last week and found manganese in the water, apparently caused when flooding caused an abandoned mine to fill up and overflow into a stream that empties into Crafts Colly Creek. The plume — much diluted — was still visible in the North Fork of the Kentucky River near the River Park. (Photo by Jennifer Honeycutt)
