A handicap pool lift was recently installed at the Whitesburg Municipal Swimming Pool.
“It’s something that we have wanted to do for some time for our physically challenged people so they can enjoy the pool as well as everyone else,” said Whitesburg Mayor James W. Craft. “Now, that we have some money we were able to do that. It’s so nice.”
To use the lift, a person must be mobile enough to sit in the chair and use the remote control to lower himself or herself into the water.
The equipment cost $5,500 and labor totaled nearly $4,000, Craft said. The pool lift was paid for by a partial grant awarded through the Kentucky River Area Development District (KRADD) and the City of Whitesburg’s general fund.
The installation took about a week, including removing concrete and pouring new concrete.
The pool lift, which can hold a maximum of 400 pounds, meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
The Whitesburg pool is set to open Friday, May 23. Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.
