A Pound, Virginia, man has been charged with attempted murder of the Norton Police chief during a shooting at a shopping center Friday afternoon.
According to authorities, Norton Chief James C. Lane was answering a shoplifter complaint at a business in the Walmart shopping plaza shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, when he encountered a man walking near the business. Police say the man began shooting into Lane’s cruiser, striking him twice. Lane returned fire, and another Norton Police officer who just arrived also fired his weapon at the man.
Both Lane and James Dyer Buckland, 36, of Pound, were seriously wounded during the exchange and were flown to Johnson City Medical Center. Lane underwent surgery Saturday night and was reportedly in stable condition. No information about Buckland’s condition was available.
Buckland is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Police say a gun used by Buckland was recovered from the scene of the shooting. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office is investigating in conjunction with Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp. Norton City Police requested that the outside agencies investigate.
