Preservation Hall Jazz Band to be featured in concert

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is will play March 15 in Big Stone Gap, Va. The program, presented by Pro- Art Association as part of the W. Campbell Edmonds Memorial Concert Series, is at 3 p.m. in Mountain Empire Community College’s Goodloe Center.

The band takes its name from the music venue which was founded in 1961 as a sanctuary to protect and honor the music which had lost much of its popularity to modern jazz and rock-‘n’- roll. The hall is located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, just three blocks from the Mississippi River.

The band began touring in 1963 and is now under the direction of Ben Jaffe, son of Preservation Hall founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Its members, some of whom are in their 70s and 80s, travel worldwide to share the art form of New Orleans jazz.

Admission is $12 adults, $8 seniors and $6 students. For more information or for assistance for persons with special needs, visit www.pro-art-va.org or call (276) 376-4520.
